The French Prime Minister, Gabriel Attal, recently took steps to integrate artificial intelligence (IA) in public administration, promising a significant simplification of administrative procedures for citizens and civil servants. This commitment was clearly expressed during his visit to the France Services house in Sceaux on 23 April 2024, underlining an ambitious roadmap aimed at deploying a sovereign AI, named Albert, to effectively serve the public.
The desire to adopt an AI developed in France is a strategic approach to ensure digital sovereignty while optimizing administrative services. Albert AI is not only a technological tool; it represents a vision where the technology works hand in hand with humans to improve the efficiency and responsiveness of public services. Gabriel Attal said: “Let's choose AI, don't suffer from it”, insisting on the opportunity to put people back at the heart of public services.
The implications of these innovations are profound. For example, as of the start of the school year in September, the administration will use fiscal data to automatically award school grants to eligible families, thus eliminating the need for administrative procedures that are often cumbersome. Gabriel Attal explained: “To fight against the non-use of social rights, the administration will use fiscal data from the start of the school year in September to directly offer a school grant to the 1.5 million families who are entitled to it, without any action on their part.”
The government's commitment goes beyond the simple automation; it envisions an administration where repetitive tasks are delegated to the AI, allowing officials to focus on more meaningful interactions with citizens. This reflects an approach where technology is seen not as a substitute for humans, but as a facilitator that enriches the quality of public services.
The government's initiative to deploy artificial intelligence to simplify public administration marks a potential turning point in the way government services interact with citizens. By reducing bureaucracy and improving efficiency, this strategy could well redefine modern governance.
